The Platonic Theater of Thought

We must start again from the striking gap that exists between Plato’s writing and the way we read it. This gap is all the more striking because it has long seemed concealed by the assumption that the extraordinary literary quality of his work was philosophically insignificant.
However, it is by no means insignificant—even for their philosophies—that Plato was a master of the dialogos, or that Parmenides was a versifier (probably not as poor a one as is often claimed). The use of dactylic hexameter by the Eleatic, just like the theatrical dialogue employed by the Athenian, cannot be overlooked without diminishing our understanding of their philosophies.
