The concept of model-based reasoning, RBM, is today a central topic in the disciplinary  fields of logic, philosophy of science and cognitive science. However, its inferential nature remains problematic. In this paper, the aforementioned problem is tackled in two separate stages:  first, the specific idea of model involved in RBM is both identifi  ed and clarified, and secondly, a thesis is proposed and developed, namely that its inferential nature possesses the following fourfold root that differentiates it from the proposition and rule based standard enunciative format: iconic model representation, model manipulation concept, structural conservation in the conclusion, and direct access.
