The present article searchs the role of Don Quijote, the spanish literary hero, in the knowledge of Miguel de Unamuno and José Ortega y Gasset. For Unamuno, Don Quijote is the tragic figure of freedom, that is to say, the hero fragmented by himself; the tragic hero who simbolizes the spirit of faith in front of common prosaic spirit of world. On the other side, Don Quijote means for Ortega the affirmation of life by culture, the vital function of hero as an organ of liberty.
