Our philosophical tradition has functioned as a myth of rationality and notas a development of rationality itself. This tradition exhibits all thecharacteristics typical of mythic – magical systems. Only a change in socialconditions could permit the emergence of genuine rationality. Conversely,only the emergence of a genuine rationality could bring about the emergenceof appropriate social conditions for rationality to thrive in. There cannot bea genuine philosophical development outside of appropriate socialconditions. A sketch of this situation is here attempted
