The immorality of atheism
Main Article Content
Context: Within the framework of Plato's arguments in the dialogues Euthyphro and Laws, this article examines the different dimensions of the challenge posed by atheism and impiety to the morality of citizens and the stability of political institutions. The last section describes some of the difficulties modern democracies face in establishing legal and political limits on criticism of religious practices and beliefs.
Methodology: Plato's dialogues Euthyphro and Laws were closely studied to support the assessments and comparisons between early and late conceptions of piety and religious belief. Current and highly regarded academic literature was also used.
Conclusions: The presentation concludes that modern democracies lack the legitimacy to defend legal and penal initiatives similar to those advocated by Plato, and that religious beliefs deserve the same legal protection afforded by freedom of expression as any other type of belief.
