Research on language is the subject of reflection for linguists, philosophers, sociologists, and psychologists, which requires interdisciplinary work. This article examines the assumptions of a thinker who meditated on the sociological and philosophical theories of his time in order to reflect on language. The thinking of F. De Saussure remains relevant today insofar as its uniqueness lies, on the one hand, in breaking free from the constraints of structuralist methodology and, on the other, in combining linguistic reflection with that of sociology and philosophy. Two fundamental Saussurean concepts, “linguistic value” and relative arbitrariness, are still today subjects of reflection and discussion.
