This essay aims to provide a critical presentation of the theory of scientific rationality proposed by Hungarian philosopher Imre Lakatos, a theory known as the methodology of scientific research programs. Lakatos is one of the most ardent defenders of contemporary normative rationality; as such, the article analyzes the results and limitations of normative rationality as a valid explanation for scientific change.
