The purpose of this essay is to contribute to the understanding of a passage from Timaeus (from 47e3 to 52d1) where Plato resumes his discourse on the nature of the cosmos. In the first section (I), I attempt to shed light on Plato's use of the concept of necessity (anánkê) and its relationship of opposition and complementarity with the noûs in the constitution of the cosmos. This task, in turn, involves accounting for the close relationship between space (chôra) and element (stoicheia). The second movement (II) is defined as an attempt to interpret the difficult passage (52c1-d1) where the relationships between space, image, and idea are discussed. The central thesis is as follows: the particularity of chôra is transparency, which in turn allows the image and the idea and their differences to be related.
