Substance, Nature, and “Composite Unity” in Descartes

In the first section of the paper, I examine some definitions of substance offered by Descartes in his work, aiming to discuss whether humans are substances. Also, within the scope of this discussion is whether specific bodies and, consequently, animals are substances or modes of a single corporeal substance. In the second part, I examine the concept of nature; in the third and final section, I examine the concept of “composite unity”. The theory I purport is that, although for Descartes, humans and animals form “composite unities” and, moreover, are bestowed upon particular natures, freely established by God, they cannot be considered cartesian substances
